carl hansen & son CH24 / Wishbone Chair

The Wishbone chair, sometimes also referred to as the Y-Chair due to its distinctive Y-shaped back, was designed in 1949 by Hans J. Wegner. The chair was his first collaboration with Carl Hansen & Son and has been in continuous production since 1950 making it one of Wegner’s most successful designs. The Wishbone chair is the last design in a series that Wegner started in 1944 taking inspiration from a portrait of Danish merchants sitting on Chinese Ming chairs. Despite its simple appearance the Wishbone chair takes craftsmen over 100 steps to create which include steam-bending the back legs and back rail and hand-weaving the seat with over 120 meters of paper cord. The chair is available in natural woods or coloured lacquers with different options of paper cord
