Objects of Desire
I've found the perfect book - and now I need the perfect chair to curl up in - and thankfully those clever folks at Sapphire Living Space have done all the hard work for me, says Interiors Editor CAROL BURNS.
Danish furniture designer, Hans J.Wegner was one of a small group of Danish furniture designers whose creations significantly contributed to the popularity of mid-century Danish design, a style that was all the rage with cosmopolitan Americans in the '50's and '60s.
In 1960, Wegner sketched an upholstered easy chair which has since become one of his most celebrated works. The Wing Chair (also known as CH445) was originally only produced in limited number until Danish furniture maker Carl Hansen & Son dusted off the drawings and brought this contemporary back to life. The Wing Chair has all the hallmarks of Wegner's best work and received both international acclaim and design awards, including a classic innovation award at the 2006 IMM Cologne furniture fair where it was relaunched.
Staying true to the original blueprint by using Wegner's original 1:1 drawings Carl Hansen & Son have upheld the original construction and materials including solid beech frames and hand-sewn piping.
Wegner's clever design means the Wing Chair is angled in such a way that your body can't help but relax. The 'wings' provide superior support for your upper back, neck and head, while the roomy seat allows you to sit in a variety of positions. The chair comes in a wide range of colours and fabrics to suit every taste and upholstery options include luxury cashmere or top grain aniline leather.
This design classic will set you back from £3,060 but it will just get better with age.
